Typewriters and typography

A showcase exhibition by Jonathan Lachance

April 2 - 26, 2025 @ Artexte's reading room

At the intersection of his interest in typography and a fondness for artist books by Caroline Ariane Bergeron, Jonathan Lachance, documentation technician at Artexte, discovered typewriter art and dug into the collection to learn more.

His research, at first focused on works based on typewriter-like monospace fonts, led him to the artist files of Gustave Morin and Elsa Werth, but was soon expanded to include the various forms that typography-based art practices can take. These practices include installations, asemic writing, and drawing, whether it be based in design or calligraphy. The addition of Letraset sheets (a type of dry-transfer decal) and reference works from his personal library further illustrate these practices and their historical context.
