Landscape photo on which a Moebius magazine and the two excerpts of texts from the second Cercle de lecture, presented in collaboration with the bookstore Un livre à soi, are positioned randomly on a white and black background created by the all-over pattern of the bookmarks of the bookstore Un livre à soi. At the bottom of the photo is a light mauve band featuring the logos of the City of Montreal's Ville-Marie borough and Un livre à soi bookstore, both on the right.

Artexte’s Book Club n°2 | in collaboration with Un Livre à Soi Bookshop

Theme: Influential correspondences

February 15, 2025 – 2 PM to 5 PM @ Artexte's reading room

Artexte invites you to the second edition of its new educational activity that pairs contemporary visual arts and literature. Artexte’s Book Club offers three seasonal activities during which independent Montreal bookstores are invited to choose a theme that will be embodied and discussed through excerpts from recent titles on their shelves. This cycle of participatory and collaborative gatherings is an opportunity to discover new contemporary artistic practices, the work of underrepresented artists and authors in the cultural landscape, and above all to gain new insight into the centre’s documentary collection.

For the second edition of our Book Club on Saturday, February 15, 2025, we are pleased to collaborate with Un livre à soi, and with authors Lula Carballo (they) and Jessica Lubino (she/her), who will share their thoughts on influential correspondence as a form of tribute to our artists through their respective texts: Écrire pour oublier (2024) and Femme parfaitement imparfaite (2024).

About the selected theme:

Filiation is a creative and sensitive approach common to many forms of cultural expression. Artistic correspondence establishes a living connection that carries multiple intentions, including research, reflection, the duty of remembrance, and the search for inspiration, among others.

More specifically, we will explore the notion of homage, a motive for correspondence that seeks to recognize peers who inspire the personal and artistic paths of our cultural actors through the eyes of feminist, intersectional, and plural identity contributors. Through our collective incursion in the words of our guest writers, and the discovery of related visual art practices from Artexte’s collection, this exchange will highlight the matrilinear dimension of artistic filiation, which has the potential to transcend generations and borders. Finally, we will examine the need to recognize living cultural figures. Why wait until these women are no longer alive to dare to discuss their work? To hear them? To understand their process?
