Contemporary Arts X Wiki Virtual Workshops

Contribute to the presence of Quebec and Canadian visual arts on Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia

September, 2021 - February, 2022 — 5 PM to 7 PM @ online / every last Thursday of the month

ARTEXTE Information Centre, the RCAAQ / Réseau Art Actuel and Repaire – Regroupement de pairs des arts  indépendants de recherche et d’expérimentation (previously known as the Conseil québécois des arts médiatiques, the Regroupement des arts interdisciplinaires du Québec) are partnering to launch a second series of Wikipedia contribution which is designed to introduce the artistic community to Wikimedia projects and to document the practices, artists and organizations that make up the Quebec and Canadian contemporary arts ecosystem.

The Contemporary Arts X Wiki Workshops take place online every last Thursday of the month from 5 to 7pm :

  • September 30, 2021 : ecosystems, ecology and nature

  • October 28, 2021 : the body as a political space

“Vast and multifaceted, the body is both subject and author. Used by artists to explore issues of identity, power and beauty, the body also manifests itself as a political space to explore, and even challenge its limits, real and artificial”.

  • February 24, 2022 : Vie des arts: Activate the Archives 1956-1975

Quarterly magazine founded in 1956 with the goal of recognizing and promoting the understanding of Quebec and Canadian contemporary art, Vie des arts holds digital archives covering a period of more than 65 years, the majority of which are accessible in digital format. The virtual Wiki workshop “Activate the archives 1956-1975” is an invitation to revisit a 20-year period between 1956 and 1975, as covered by Vie des arts when it was one of the few active art magazines, based in Quebec, supporting the emergence and transformation of art criticism.”

Special guest:

Jade Boivin holds a master’s degree in art history, and is an editor and author. She is interested in the public potential of writing about art in its creative, literary and critical forms. Having developed and implemented the complete redesign of the headings and visual identity of Vie des arts magazine, for which she acts as editor-in-chief, she also leads various partnership projects that serve the development of Francophone art criticism.

The workshop format is informal and may include a discussion with a guest speaker, an introduction to the contribution on Wikipedia and discussion periods between participants and with the organizers. Representatives from Artexte and RCAAQ and Repaire will be there to virtually guide those who need a helping hand and to have a chat with you between contributions.

Everyone interested in Quebec and Canadian arts and the Wikimedia Foundation’s projects is welcome: artists, cultural workers, researchers, amateurs of contemporary arts, and curious people! In addition, people under-represented in Wikipedia, especially women, people from LGBTQ2S+ communities and people from Indigenous, ethnocultural or racialized communities are encouraged to participate!
