Artexte X Symposium international d’art contemporain de Baie-Saint-Paul

Inside/Outside

July 26 - August 25, 2019

For the 37th edition of the Symposium international d’art contemporain de Baie-Saint-Paul, within the theme Art, Architecture, Landscape, Environment, Artexte propose an abridged version of the exhibition Inside/Outside: Images of the LAND in Artexte’s Collection curated by Karla McManus.

Highlighting the vast practice of critical land-based image-making in Canada, the exhibition aims to challenge the traditional framework of landscape photography to incorporate notions of belonging, identity-formation, and place-making through the interaction and intervention with land.

Karla McManus is an art historian who specializes in the study of photography and the environmental imaginary. Her writing and research consider how historic and contemporary concerns about the environment—from wildlife conservation, to environmental contamination, to anxiety about the future—are visualized photographically.
