The Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal and Artexte information centre are joining together to highlight the work of artists and authors from groups that are underrepresented in Wikipedia, including women, people of colour and people from the LGBTQ+ community, with a Wikipedia Art+Feminism edit-a-thon!
Artexte’s collection includes documentation on visual arts from 1965 to the present with a particular emphasis on practices in Canada and in Québec.
The collection includes many different types of publications that testify to the artistic practices in Canada and abroad as well as printed ephemera including posters, pamphlets, invitation cards, press clippings and visual documentation.
For the event, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal will share a series of documentation files from the collection of the museum’s médiathèque with the goal of providing access to the Wikipedia editors during the edit-a-thon. The documentation will include files on many flagship events presented at the museum on the work of women artists, as well as a selection of artist files from artists who have made major contributions to the field of contemporary art since the 1960’s,
In order to assist the editors with locating and using reliable information sources for their articles, we will have on hand, files on artists and collectives who do not yet have Wikipedia pages, or whose pages need translation or requires updating.
Speaker biographies :
Eunice Bélidor is a curator, critic and researcher, specializing in contemporary Haitian art, and interested in fashion design, performance, post-black studies and feminism. She questions everything, believing that asking the right questions are the best ways to come up with creative and thoughtful answers. Her writing has been published in the Journal of Curatorial Studies, Invitation (Art Mûr gallery), InCirculation, and Espace Art Actuel. She is the creator of #CuratorialTips, a research and help tool for curators. She regularly takes part in various juries and committees: she currently sits on the Visual Arts Evaluation Committee at the Conseil des Arts de Montréal. She currently works as programming coordinator at articule, an artist-run centre in Montreal.
Amber Berson is a writer, curator, and Ph.D. student conducting doctoral research at Queen’s University on artist-run culture and feminist, utopian thinking. Her writing has been published in Breach Magazine, Canadian Art, C Magazine, Revue .dpi, Esse, Fuse Magazine and the St Andrews Journal of Art History and Museum Studies. She is the Canadian ambassador for the Art+Feminism Wikipedia project.
Nathalie Casemajor is an Assistant Professor in the Urbanisation Culture Société Research Centre at INRS (Institut national de la recherche scientifique, Montreal). Her work focuses on cultural development and digital culture. She is the coordinator of the Observatory of Cultural Mediations and coedited the book Expériences critiques de la médiation culturelle (PUL, 2017). She also conducted research projects on cultural institutions and Wikipedia, arts and public space and the circulation of news and artworks on the Web.
