Fall 2009
During the months of September and October 2009, Artexte is hosting the research residency of Finnish curator Silja Lehtonen. The first in a series of cultural exchanges between Finland and Quebec, this collaboration provides an opportunity for innovative research as it raises greater awareness of our respective artistic communities.
As part of her residency, Lehtonen is examining contemporary art practices from Canada and Quebec in relation to both Finnish and international contexts. She is also devoting part of her time to investigate Artexte’s extensive holdings on sound-based art – arguing that Canada has developed a solid reputation in this area of artistic production. Lehtonen expects her findings will inform her continued research into the nascent sound art movement in her home country.

Silja Lehtonen is the Curator of Contemporary Art at Aboa Vetus & Ars Nova in Turku, Finland, and has been responsible for numerous exhibitions of both Finnish and international artists. An active member of the Finnish arts community, Lehtonen has also been organizing the Turku Biennial since 2003.
