The Projet MOBILIVRE – BOOKMOBILE Project was a collaboration based in Montréal and Philadelphia drawn from the tradition of the bookmobile portable library. From 2001 to 2005, the Bookmobile collective visited communities across Canada and the United States displaying a collection of zines, artists’ books and independent publications. While on tour they also ran skill-sharing workshops, which taught participants how to create handmade books of their own. The Bookmobile Book, published in 2014, reflects on the project’s five-year run through detailed essays and documentation including photographs, correspondence, ephemera and drawings. The contents of the book are informative and often humorous, recounting experiences on tour while explaining the motivations and ideals behind the project.
Those who are curious to see some of the books and ephemera first hand will be happy to know that Projet MOBILIVRE – BOOKMOBILE Project donated their collections to Artexte, which includes more than 600 publications as well as various ephemera and documentation of the project. Access is free and anyone is welcome to drop in and browse through the collection !
