Nor: Ideas of North features the work of twenty Canadian visual artists and eight writers who express their “ideas of North” in this portable exhibition. The unbound pages, neatly enclosed in a minimal, white slipcase involve a variety of different mediums including poetry, prose, photography and print. Often drawing from personal narratives, memory and fantasy, each work portrays a unique vision of a North, both real and imagined.
These works reveal that the concept of North, although loaded with imagery, is not limited to any specific place. In a text entitled North by West by Tara McVicar, we are reminded that being North is relative to where we are situated and subject to our own perceptions.
Nor: Ideas of North was conceived by Daniel Canty and Dana Velan. Canty, who works as an artist, writer and translator, completed an Artexte research residency in the fall of 2013, culminating in his publication titled Bucky Ball and the eponymous exhibition in 2014. JH
